In 2010 I was doing a clinical rotation at Michigan State University’s small animal clinic when I heard about a kitten that was brought in. She was in very rough shape and was dropped off at the clinic as an owner surrender. Often times, if nobody steps up to cover the cost of medical care, these owner surrenders are euthanized. It is a sad fact that there just aren’t enough homes and funds for every animal. Luckily for me and this kitten, I was in the right place at the right time to offer help.

When I first saw her my heart broke. It was determined by the vet that took her case that she was hit in the head by some kind of blunt force and both her eyes popped out of her head. She also had a hole that opened up in the roof of her mouth that allowed for drainage from her badly damaged eyes. She was immediately put on pain medication, had surgery to remove both eyes and was then allowed to heal surrounded by love and care in my home. I was there for every step of this process. We were able to take a heartbreaking case and completely turn her life around. Thirteen years later, she’s perfect and I still love her with all my heart. This little life allowed me to see how resilient animals can be and how love and proper medical care can allow them to live a beautiful, happy life.
